Wieder für Einheit in Kendal sorgen

Guy Tirvengadum als neuer Bürgermeister eingeführt / Ende November zu Besuch in Rinteln

Rinteln/Kendal. Der neue Bürgermeister Kendals ist im Amt: Mit Guy Tirvengadum, gebürtig von Mauritius im Indischen Ozean, repräsentiert nun ein Jahr lang ein Mann mit dunklerer Hautfarbe die Stadt, ein Zeichen der Vielfalt der Bevölkerung. In einer feierlichen Zeremonie hat er das Amt von Andy Blackman übernommen und darf nun den roten Mantel und die Amtskette tragen. Ende November besucht er Rinteln.

Tirvengadum, der für den Ortsteil Oxenholme (mit dem Fernbahnhof) im Stadtrat sitzt, ist ebenso Liberaldemokrat wie sein Vorgänger, es gibt nur einen Grünen als Opposition. Er hat sich die Pflege der Vielfalt Kendals auf die Fahne geschrieben, will diese noch mehr zu einer Gemeinschaft vereinen, zitierte ihn die örtliche Wochenzeitung „Westmorland Gazette“. „Ich bin sehr aufgeregt, Bürgermeister zu sein," sagte er. „Ich will Stadtoberhaupt für alle sein, egal welcher Rasse, Hautfarbe, Religion und gesellschaftlicher Schicht. Ihm ist wichtig, weil zuletzt wegen Brexit und eines Parkplatzstreits die Bevölkerung sehr gespalten schien. Er hofft nun, dass alle wieder an einem Strang ziehen - zum Wohle Kendals.

Eine der ersten Aufgaben des neuen Bürgermeisters wird es sein, Kendals erstes „Unity Festival“ (Einheitsfest) zu organisieren. Es wird am 23. Juni in der ganzen Stadt gefeiert, mit Fokus auf Abbot Hall Park, Kulturzentrum Alte Brauerei und Unity Chapel.

Ein Jahr hat Tirvengadum bereits als Stellvertreter von Andy Blackman Amtsluft geschnuppert und lobt: "Andy Blackman war ein fantastischer Bürgermeister. Es wird schwer, ihm nachzufolgen. Wir sind gute Freunde geworden."

Tirvengadum stammt von Mauritius, ist medizinischer Berater, mit einer Krankenschwester verheiratet und hat vier Kinder. Mit drei von ihnen reist das Ehepaar Ende November zur Eröffnung des Adventszaubers in Rinteln und des Weihnachtsmarkts der Lebenshilfe Rinteln an. Auch ein Besuch beim Weihnachtszauber im Schloss Bückeburg ist geplant. Begleitet wird er voraussichtlich von elf weiteren Kendalern.

Zur Amtseinführung hatte Roswitha Hoekstra, Beisitzerin für Kendal im Rintelner Verein für Städtepartnerschaften, ein Grußwort von Bürgermeister Thomas Priemer im Rathaussaal verlesen. „Guy ist offen und sehr nett, wir verstehen uns gut“, schilderte sie ihren ersten Eindruck. „Zur Einführung waren sogar seine Mutter aus Mauritius und seine Schwester aus Kopenhagen angereist. Für ihn ist das Amt ein ganz große Ehre.“

Roswitha Hoekstra vertiefte auch ihre Kontakte zum Partnerschaftskomitee in Kendal, zur Behindertenhilfe WOSP und zu Andy Blackman: „Der Ex-Bürgermeister will sich nun stärker um sein Projekt Wandertourismus und den Besuch einer Wanderergruppe in Rinteln kümmern.“ dil

KENDAL’S new mayor has formally taken office in a ceremony at the town hall.

Cllr Guy Tirvengadum, who sits on Kendal Town Council for Oxenholme ward, has taken over from fellow Liberal Democrat Andy Blackman.

Cllr Tirvengadum’s chosen theme for the year is diversity, and he said that he aimed to unite Kendal’s community during his term in office.

“I am very excited to be mayor,” he said. “I am looking forward to the role. I want to be a mayor for all the people of Kendal and make a real difference for everybody, no matter their race, background, beliefs or social class.

“I have chosen diversity as my theme because, since Brexit and over issues like New Road, the community has become quite divided.

“I am hoping to unite everybody again and get people working and living together in harmony for the betterment of Kendal.”

One of the first things Cllr Tirvengadum will be doing towards establishing his theme is organising Kendal’s first ever Unity Festival.

The festival will be taking place on June 23 in venues across town. The focal point will be Abbot Hall Park, with other events taking place around the town centre including the Brewery Arts Centre and the Unity Chapel.

For the past year Cllr Tirvengadum has served as deputy mayor helping his predecessor Cllr Blackman in his mayoral duties.

“Andy Blackman has been a fantastic mayor,” he said. “He will be a hard act to follow.

“Throughout the past 12 months we have developed a close friendship as well as working relationship.

“He is somebody I admire. He is very genuine and I hope I can do as good a job as he has done.”
